Your favorite jogging route in Melbourne? [Jan. 4th, 2009|08:34 pm]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
Like the rest of the world, one of my 2009 resolutions is fitness and weight-loss. I'm working on finding the best running paths around Melbourne and I need your advice - what are yours? What's the difficulty? Anything cool to see on the way?

I was going to suggest the Yarra River Trail actually! I think towards Carlton it's the Capital City Trail, and it wasn't until I'd racked up enough k's (and nerve) that I realised you can pretty much follow that trail from North Melbourne, wind along the Yarra via Fairfield and Richmond, and kick on into Fed Square.

Do you just run from near your house, or are you willing to drive somewhere to run? What do you consider difficult; type of road/trail, hills, interruptions like stairs/bridges, stopping for traffic?

I've lived all over the shop, so I've run along a heck of a lot of different paths. If you want a break from the Yarra, try going along the Maribyrnong to Williamtown, or along any stretch of beach like Elwood towards Gardenvale/Brighton, or if you like running in the evening it's pretty quiet cruising around South Melbourne to Docklands.

A quick Google of bike paths got me here which also links to Bicycle Victoria... I figure if you can ride on it, you can run on it, and other people have already scoped out different places for you to go already.

Otherwise I'd suggest grabbing the Melway for some inspiration. You don't have to go too far into the 'burbs to find a whole heap of parks that have nice scenery, little traffic, and good paths to run on. Have fun. :)

good luck on the resolution - just checked out your blog and saw the number of kg you want to lose. big number!

it seems like a lot of people (more so than normal) are committing to fitness/diet for 2009 - keep us updated, i love reading about people's endeavours and what works for them. i wanted to start a comm for my friends, but can't think of a name I like.

True Nadz, but I think there are some significant changes I think I could make that would start the kilograms flying off.

I think a big part of things was that I was, and still struggle with being an emotional eater. I eat when I don't feel so hot.

A series of events over 2007 and 2008 have boosted my confidence incredibly and I'm now in a position where I'm able to find other things that fill that 'hole'.

I'm determined to be able to run that circuit I posted by June.

40kg is less than one kg a week, which is doable. it sounds like you're in a good spot, which makes all the difference.

i'm going to try and drink less as well this year - it's just empty calories that i don't need.

do you and cait cook a lot of your own food or do you eat out? if i could recommend one thing to anyone, it's to eat unprocessed food and not to eat foods that make 'health claims' (ie. fat free, rich in vitamins) and food with ingredients that your great grandparents wouldn't recognise. The difference it makes in how you feel energy wise is amazing.

Cait's always making nourishing dinners with great ingredients. I've just either ate too much or vetoed leftovers in favour of takeout.

But as I've said, yeah, in a much better spot. Things are coming together slowly and I'm in a position where unprocessed, homecooked meals like like the business to my tastebuds.
